August Update
Along with the school board election in August, it
will also be the primary election for our state representatives. I
reported last week about the changes in the state district lines and
that many in the 5th, 6th and 3rd districts will be moved to the 32nd
district, Julia Hurley's district. So far Jimmy Matlock has picked up a petition to seek reelection as the 21st district representative. No one else has picked up petitions to challenge Matlock. In the 32nd district, Ms. Hurley has picked up a petition to seek reelection. At least one other candidate has picked up a petition to challenge Hurley for her seat. Kent Calfee of Roane County apparently plans to challenge Hurley. Calfee is a former Roane County commissioner. In the school board race, Jeremy Buckles picked up petitions for both seats in the 5th district. Former 5th district board member, Freddie Gene Walker, has also picked up to run for seat "B". Walker was defeated in 2008 by current incumbent Gary Ubben. 7th district board member, Craig Simon has filed his petition and has qualified to seek reelection. No one has yet picked up a petition to run for the school board seat in the 3rd district where current incumbent Lisa Russell has announced she will not seek reelection.
