Arson suspected in Greenback house fire

Arson is suspected in a fire early Tuesday morning at the home of Charlotte Headrick on Cloyds Church Road in Greenback.

The residence was unoccupied at the time because Headrick was staying with her daughter in Maryville, said Greenback Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ronnie Lett.

The fire in the single-story wood structure started on the outside corner of the house and got up into the eaves, he said.

Both Greenback and Friendsville volunteer fire departments responded to the fire because it was right on the line, winding up in the Greenback fire district.
According to the report of a Blount County deputy, Lett approached him at the scene and “advised that this fire was obviously intentionally set on an exterior wall of the structure.”

Two teenagers at the scene, ages 13 and 14, are suspects in the apparent arson “due to their vague and conflicting and changing accounts of the events,” according to the report.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, according to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Marian O’Briant.
