911 Funding Cut 3

Back in September, apparently acting all on his own, Lenoir City mayor, Tony Aikens, decided to cut the city's funding to the Loudon County 911 Emergency Communications. According to Aikens letter below, he cut the funding out because of "the litigation going on between commissioner Van Shaver and Lenoir City." Of course, that's absurd.

It has come to my attention that Aikens, to this day, still hasn't informed, at least some, council members that he alone, without even telling them, cut out the funding even though all council members names are on Aikens letter.

Given that, I have sent all the council members a copy of Aikens letter so they will know what the mayor did. Maybe the council will have a little more concern for their police departments safety.

Are there any council members that will support funding for 911?

Honorable Council Member,

On September 25th, 2023, mayor Tony Aikens sent a letter to Ms. Rose White, Director of The Loudon County Communications District, that the city will not provide the $10,000.00 in funding they had committed to and paid in the previous fiscal year. The $10,000.00 was a commitment to help pay for the NCIC services for the Lenoir City Police Department.

I now understand that mayor Aikens still hasn't informed, at least some members of council, his unilateral decision to cut the funding. Given that, as a member of the 911 board, I wanted to share the mayor's letter with you, to be sure you were aware of it, and to ask that you, as the funding body for the city, please reinstate this important funding which helps provide additional safety for the officers of the Lenoir City Police Department.

Thanks,

Van Shaver
Loudon County Commission
Loudon County 911 Board member
