911 Funding Cut 12

After the 911 Funding Cut issue was raised by Lenoir City council member, Robin McNabb, mayor Tony Aikens sent out a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, between Loudon, Lenoir City and 911 Emergency Communications, signed by Aikens. You can read below.

Aikens said the funding was on a year by year basis. Apparently, he feels this some how gave him the sole authority to cut the funding without council's approval just because he's mad at Loudon County for suing him for his illegal annexations. It did not. Here's a news flash for Aikens, all government funding is year by year. Fortunately, Loudon officials apparently feel supporting 911 is important enough to continue the funding even though the MOU says they don't have to. Aikens should have added a clause stateing he would continue the funding unless he gets mad at somebody.

Councilwoman McNabb asked to have the matter placed on the next council agenda for discussion, tonight 3/24. But apparently, Aikens has come up with a new rule that it takes two council members to put anything on the agenda. Not sure when Aikens came up with this new rule. Don't think such a rule is in the charter and certainly not in Roberts Rules. I suspect Aikens implemented his new rule after councilman Kennedy got elected knowing he could keep any other council member from agreeing to add anything to an agenda.

Don't know if the 911 bill will make it to the agenda tonight but hopefully, councilman Kennedy will join councilwoman McNabb in getting on the agenda. Even if it does, you can bet the other four council members won't vote to provide the funding.

We'll see tonight.
