51-year-old Florida woman nabbed for DUI, pills

A Florida woman is facing multiple charges in Loudon County after being stopped for the unsafe operation of a vehicle on Interstate 75.

Responding to a call at 8:45 p.m. Friday of a reckless driver who was traveling north from mile marker 62 on the interstate, Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Miller caught up to a Ford Explorer at mile marker 79 and noticed that the driver was “failing to exercise due care” by going 57-60 mph and not controlling the vehicle on the road.

After stopping the vehicle, Miller found Donna Kay Mullins, 51, of Telogia, Fla., to have drooping eyes, dilated pupils and slurred speech.
Miller said Mullins was unable to perform field sobriety tests, was “unsteady on her feet, and almost fell multiple times.” Miller explained implied consent law to Mullins, and she consented to a legal blood draw.

During an inventory of the vehicle, police found a bottle of 350 mg tablets of carisoprodol in the center console. The bottle did not have a label, and Mullins could not supply a prescription, according to police.

In a separate incident at Loudon County Jail, a Loudon County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a search through Mullins’ purse and found a plastic bag containing a green, leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana. The bag was located on the outside zipper pouch of Mullins’ wallet, according to police. Before the search, police asked Mullins if she had any contraband in her possession, and the woman said, “No,” according to officers.

Mullins was charged with driving under the influence-first offense, possession of a Schedule IV substance and simple possession/casual exchange and held on $23,000 bond.

Pair arrested for drugs

Two men were taken to Loudon County Jail after police found prescription pills, unlabeled medicine bottles, a handgun and a woman’s purse during a stop for speeding in the early hours of Monday morning.

Observing a Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling 79 mph in a 65 mph zone about 4 a.m. Monday along Interstate 75 near mile marker 76, an LCSO deputy identified the driver as Nelson Joshua Serrano, 22, Madisonville, and the passenger as Dustin Alex Potter, 22, Sweetwater.

Smelling alcohol in the vehicle, the deputy asked if the car had any firearms, and Serrano said, “Yes,” according to the report. “The passenger then opened the glove box and was reaching for a gun,” Deputy Jamie Ketner said. “I asked him to shut the glove box and for both subjects to step out of the vehicle.”

Serrano told police that he had one beer and one shot at Cotton Eyed Joe, and Potter also said he had been drinking at the restaurant. Potter told police that the handgun found in the vehicle, a CPX-1 9 mm, belonged to him. While retrieving the gun from the glove box, Ketner found multiple pills, bottles without labels, a purse and cards in the passenger floorboard.

The two men said the items did not belong to them and that they found the purse in the restaurant parking lot. Pills found on the scene included eight hydrocodone, seven prednisone, 28 promethazine and 18 doxycycline. A female identification card was located inside the purse, and officials in Knox County attempted to contact the owner.

Serrano was charged with possession of legend drugs and manufacture/sell/delivery/resale of a Schedule II substance and released on $7,000 bond. Potter was charged with possession of legend drugs, manufacture/sell/delivery/resale of a Schedule II substance and possession of a handgun while under the influence and released on $12,000 bond.
