A 19-year-old from Greenback is recovering in the intensive care unit at UT Medical Center following an accident on Wednesday which resulted in Blount County Sheriff’s deputies closing a portion of the roadway later that day, according to Blount County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Marian O’Briant.

“The victim, Zane Goins, is recovering in the ICU at the University of Tennessee Medical Center,” said O’Briant in an email exchange on Thursday. “The Traffic Unit is continuing their investigation into the crash.”

According to a police report, Goins was driving his 2014 KAWK JKA motorcycle west along Morganton Road around 8:01 a.m. Wednesday morning when he crashed into the rear passenger side of 57-year-old Marlie Luther Burchfield’s, Maryville, pickup truck.
Burchfield had reportedly been attempting to cross north onto Honeysuckle Road from the intersection of Morganton Street and Dotson Memorial Road.

Witnesses told deputies that Burchfield came to a complete stop at the Dotson Memorial Road stop sign but appeared to proceed without checking “either direction before pulling out.” When Goins hit Burchfield, it apparently sent the older man’s vehicle into a 45 degree tailspin.

Goins sustained “serious suspected injuries” and was transported to UT Medical Center via EMS.

Deputies reportedly were able to collect surveillance footage depicting the accident from a nearby convenience store. After clearing the roadways that morning and seeing Goins transported, deputies returned to the scene around 6:30 p.m. that night in order to recreate the scene.

An accident investigation is ongoing. Burchfield was found to have failed to yield the right of way in the preliminary accident report.
